Dog Mountain Shuttle

Dog Mountain Trail is 3 miles straight up (3000 ft) but at the top is one of the most spectacular views in the Gorge. In the Spring, it is so popular that permits are required on weekends. But when you ride the shuttle, there is no need for permits or parking passes.

HOW TO GET HERE FROM PORTLAND (CAR FREE)

Here is how to take the Columbia Gorge Express and transferring to the Dog Mountain Shuttle at the stop in Cascade Locks on weekends.

OPTION ONE

  • Catch the 7:20am Columbia Gorge Express shuttle from Gateway to Cascade Locks, arriving at 8:10am
  • You then have 10 mins to walk a block to catch the 8:20am Dog Mountain shuttle in front of Thunder Island Brewing.
  • You’ll be at the trailhead by 8:50am. 

OPTION TWO

  • Catch the 10:20am Columbia Gorge Express shuttle from Gateway to Cascade Locks, arriving at 11:10am
  • You then have 20 mins to relax and grab coffee at Thirsty before you catch the 11:30am Dog Mountain shuttle in front of Thunder Island Brewing.
  • You’ll be at the trailhead by 12:10pm.

HOW TO GET BACK TO PORTLAND

The shuttles from the trailhead to the Stevenson Fairgrounds 24  times each day (an average of every 25. mins).  Some of these continue on to take you back to Cascade Locks to catch your transfer to the Columbia Gorge Express back to Portland. 

Note: This trail can take up to 4 or 6 hours to climb, please plan accordingly. 

OPTION ONE:

  • Catch the 5pm Dog Mountain shuttle from the trailhead back to Cascade Locks, arriving at 5:30pm
  • This option gives you 20 mins in Cascade Locks before catching the 5:50pm CGE shuttle in front of Thunder Island Brewing.
  • You’ll be back at Gateway by 6:40pm

OPTION TWO:

  • Catch the 4pm Dog Mountain shuttle from the trailhead back to Cascade Locks.
  • This  option, give you an hour to grab a bite to eat in Cascade Locks before catching the 5:50pm CGE shuttle in front of Thunder Island Brewing.
  • You’ll be back at Gateway by 6:40pm

If you have some extra time, the downtown of Stevenson is worth a visit and only a 10 minutes walk from from the Fairgrounds. You’ll find lots of places to eat, breweries and an amazing waterfront park.

What About Dogs?

Well-behaved, leashed dogs are allowed on the shuttle from Stevenson Fairgrounds to the trailhead.

For the transport from Portland to the shuttle, dogs may ride under these guidelines:

  • All dogs must be on leash.
  • No dogs on seats; they must remain either on the floor or on the owner’s lap.
  • All other animals must be in a confined container or carrier.
  • Drivers may refuse to transport or may request the removal of an animal if it is creating a hazard or disturbance

GETTING THERE & BACK FROM HOOD RIVER

Note: This trail can take up to 4 or 6 hours to climb, please plan accordingly. If you have extra time before your connection to Cascade Locks, you can take an earlier shuttle and walk the 10 minutes from the Fairgrounds into downtown Stevenson or the waterfront park. 

FROM HOOD RIVER:

  • Catch the 6:50am or 8am shuttles from the CAT Terminal (224 Wasco Loop) in Hood River to arrive at the trailhead by 7:50am and 8:50am respectively.

BACK TO HOOD RIVER:

  • Catch the 12:10pm shuttle at the trailhead to Cascade Locks, arriving at 12:40pm. This gives you 90 mins to grab a bite to eat before you catch the East-bound CGE at 2:10pm in front of Columbia Market, arriving in Hood River by 2:30pm.
  • Catch the 4pm shuttle at the trailhead, arriving in Hood River by 4:50pm (no transfer needed).
  • Catch the 5pm shuttle at the trailhead, arriving in Hood River by 5:50pm (no transfer needed).
